Empowering classroom academics, creative expression in the arts, athletics, and the transformative Chapel and Faith Family experiences undergird the engaging Elementary classrooms. The objective of our elementary level education experience is to develop the whole child through project-based and cross-curricular learning with the objective to mold lifelong and responsible learners.

 

Elementary students become close classmates in small classrooms with a 15:1 student/teacher ratio. Trained in Science of Reading instruction, Kindergarten instructors focus on early literacy reading skills including phonological awareness, decoding, sight recognition as well as vocabulary and reading comprehension. In mathematics, Kindergartners build on Montessori number sense, including counting to 100, recognizing base ten patterns on a hundreds chart and adding and subtracting

within 10. 

 

In first through fourth grade students build on their foundational skills. Students grow their language and reading comprehension to include background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning and literacy knowledge (source: Scarborough's Reading Rope), as well as their number sense (place value, operations, math fact fluency, fractions and decimals), solving real-world problems and using geometry.  In addition to reading and math, elementary students experience a rich complement of science, humanities, and writing.  

 

While foundational academic skills are vital, Sion students enjoy purposeful learning that will lead them to purposeful living.  Spirituality, the arts, foreign language and athletics round-out the Sion Elementary student experience. They learn in enrichment classes including French, Art, Music, PE and Swimming.
