Clubs & Activities

Going to school is much more than just academic pursuits in class. Notre Dame de Sion School strives to educate the whole child, by looking beyond the classroom walls. Sion offers several opportunities that allow students to develop their talents and hone their leadership skills, that also provide great ways to become involved in Sion and make friends.

GRADE SCHOOL EXTRACURRICULARS:

  • Sports
    • Sports begin in the third grade at Sion. Depending on the sports season, boys and girls can participate in our afterschool volleyball, basketball, track and cross-country teams. Sion belongs to the Parochial League of Kansas City (PLKC) and competes against other Catholic schools in the city.
  • Band
    • Starting in the fifth grade, every student will play a band instrument. The school provides flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, and percussion instruments. Students are welcome to purchase their own instruments if they want to learn something different (ex: Oboe, French Horn, Saxophone).
  • Choir
    • All 4th-8th graders are welcome to participate in choir practice before school on Wednesday mornings. Sion’s choir sings at our monthly Mass services, prayer services, special events, and field trips, such as Liberty Honor Choir and Bishop Miege Honor Choir.
  • Battle of the Books
    • 4th - 6th graders are encouraged to participate in Sion’s annual reading “battle.” In the fall, students will break up into teams and divide up the year’s reading list of 16-20 books. In the spring, students will then have a chance to demonstrate their comprehension of the books through a friendly competition with their fellow students.
  • Annual Musical Performance
    • Every year Sion stages a school musical. Past performances include well-known productions, such as “Shrek” and “The Music Man.”
  • Foreign Language
    • Honoring Sion’s French roots, all Montessori - 3rd graders will take regular French classes. All 4th graders will take a “Roots of Literacy” course - studying both Greek & Latin. In the 5th grade, students will take one semester of Spanish and one semester of French. Students will then choose to continue studying Spanish or French as a core subject in middle school.
  • Math Bowl
    • 3rd- 8th graders are invited to put together a team to compete in our annual Math Bowl in the spring.
All students are an integral part of our Sion community and are expected to serve one another and strengthen connections between grades. Older students help younger students as “Reading Buddies,” carpool walkers, and lunch assistants. We also help students to recognize themselves as important global citizens. We encourage service off-campus through school-led and student-driven service opportunities, such as volunteering at Harvesters or NourishKC. Starting in middle school, students are expected to complete 10 hours of service every year.
