Visual Arts

At Notre Dame de Sion School we are proud to offer our signature visual arts programming modeled after the nationally recognized, choice-based Teaching for Artistic Behavior (T.A.B.). The TAB curriculum invites students to set personal challenges and goals, choose thematic content that is meaningful to them, develop craft at over ten studio centers – including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and fiber – and routinely practice studio habits essential to the creative process.

All students are given the opportunity to participate in regular art classes in our newly designed 2D and 3D visual arts studio. Students receive instruction and resources to develop their knowledge, individual creativity and skills as they engage in the artistic process. Students participate weekly in their grade-level art classes, with elective opportunities and after-school enrichment classes also available.

Performing Arts

Given that theater is an immersive experience, students in grades 4-8 have the opportunity to act, design and build sets and serve as stage managers in Sion’s Middle School musical, which takes place in the spring.

Instrumental and Vocal Music

Kindergarten - 4th Grade

Insrumental and Vocal music instruction at Sion is infused with the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education and guided by the National Music Standards. Our faculty use Orff-Schulwerk to focus on the developmental stages of each child and combining music, movement, drama, and speech into weekly music instruction. The love of music is gained through experiencial learning as rhythmic and musical concepts are introduced at a basic level in the primary grades and revisited each year with different materials and repertoire.

Students are exposed to a variety of musical instruments including pitched and unpitched percussion such as xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, guiros, shakers, and bells. The recorder is also used in the 3rd and 4th grade level as a tool for learning and reading music. Curriculum objectives include: singing alone and with others, playing instruments alone and with others, improvising music with singing and playing instruments alone and with others, composing and arranging music, reading and notating music, listening and analyzing music performances.

5th - 8th Grades

Unique to Notre Dame de Sion School is the commitment to instrumental music education for all 5-8th grade students. Students are given the opportunity within their regular, daily, academic schedule to learn a brass or woodwind instrument. As students enter the 5th grade, they are required to select an instrument (trumpet, trombone, clarinet or flute) and continue through 6th grade. Groups of instruments (sections) have designated times before school to rehearse with only their like instruments and to get individualized instruction time. 7th and 8th grade students can continue instruction during their electives, preparing them to participate in high school band ensemble or orchestra. In addition to brass and woodwind daily instruction, students can participate in guitar and choral electives before and after school.
