Support Sion

Dear Alumnae,

Welcome back! Whether it has been five years or 50 years since you graduated, we want you to know you always have a home here at Sion. We hope that you will take a look around our website for various volunteer opportunities, as well as events for you to attend that directly support Sion. I would like to take this time to invite you to stay connected to your Sion roots and serve as a committee member on the Alumnae Association Board. We host alumnae family events, Career Day, happy hours, and collect membership dues that provide four, need-based scholarships to Sion students — just to name a few!

I am here to serve you and I want to hear from you! If you ever have any questions, or would like to learn more about how you can support our beloved alma mater, please do not hesitate to reach- out to me.

Vive Sion!

The Notre Dame de Sion High School for Girls Alumnae Association invites you to get involved and stay connected to your Sion roots. Your annual donation to the school raises funds for student scholarships and financially allows the Board to build on its efforts to expand and cultivate relationships within the Sion community.

Sheila Hughes Weiford ’66 Outstanding Alumnae Award

List of 5 items.

  • 2017 Recipient

The Notre Dame de Sion alum selection committee is excited to honor Dr. Paula Kienberger Jaudes ’64 as the recipient of the 2017 Sheila Hughes Weiford ’66 Outstanding Alum Award.
Dr. Jaudes has spent her career serving children. Following her appointment in 1978 as director of General Pediatrics at La Rabida Children's Hospital and Research Center in Chicago, she has devoted her professional life to the care of children in need. She has championed chronic illness as a pediatric medicine specialty and was the first to start a Chronic Disease Section in Pediatrics in the US. She helped codify the response to sexual abuse in children, and continues to raise awareness of the signals and effects of child abuse, neglect and maltreatment.

While her dedication and sheer determination has been recognized by her superiors and peers, she has served in many leadership roles, including the first female President and Chief Executive Officer of La Rabida Children's Hospital and Research Center from 1997-2011. After leaving her leadership role at La Rabida, Dr. Jaudes took a six-month sabbatical to spend time in Nigeria establishing a sickle cell anemia program.

In the public sector, she is Medical Director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (IDCFS), a post she has held since 1993. She helps ensure that Illinois’ foster children have access to the health services they require. Paula was the first medical director of a state child welfare agency. She has contributed significantly to academic medicine, serving on the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, since 1979 and as a full Professor since 2003.

Paula has received numerous honors and serves on numerous boards and committees of professional advocacy and government organizations. Although past the typical age of retirement, Paula continues her life's work as Medical Director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, as the Associate Director of Outreach for the Center for Global Health at the University of Chicago, and as a professor of pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Paula is an inspiration to all of us, especially young women who want to make a difference. She is also an outstanding example of the power of a Sion education!
  • About the Award

The award is named after the first recipient, Sheila Hughes Weiford '66, for her countless hours of service to Sion. Sheila graduated from the Grade School in 1962 and the High School in 1966. She joined the Alumnae Association Board as a member at large in 1972, and served as President for two terms. Returning to Sion in 1988 as a volunteer, she assisted with recruitment at the High School. In 1990, she was hired into the Admissions and Advancement Office and by 1999 was the Director of Advancement and Alumnae Affairs. During her career at Sion, Sheila raised funds for the Grade School Science Center, the High School Science and Technology Center and established the Ratisbonne Planned Giving Society; all while keeping our alums connected to their alma mater. Her knowledge of Sion is unparalleled and she has been dedicated to maintaining and growing our heritage collection.
