Diver named All-American

Mary Tutera, senior diver, became the first All-American in diving in school history. By finishing 7th at the state championship she lead the Sion Swim and Dive team an 11th place finish and broke her own school record. Four school records were broken at the championship.

Dance Team Places in National Competition

Congratulations to the high school Storm Dance Team on an outstanding finish at the National Dance Team Championships. The team placed 6th in the nation in the high kick division.

National Merit Finalist Named

2011 Yearbook Staff Wins Excellence Awards

Congratulations to the 2011 Sion yearbook staff. The National Yearbook Excellence Contest sponsored by Quill and Scroll awarded Sion a remarkable - 13 gold keys -in the national competition and also received the national sweepstakes award in Graphic Design for the 3rd year in a row. The names of the yearbook staff members who won the gold keys have not yet been released but all 13 will be eligible to apply for the prestigious Edward J. Nell Scholarship.

Students Names Finalists in Postcard Contest

Congratulations to Sophomores Madi Lamb and Maggie Keenan for being named a top 10 finalist in the 9th thru 12 grade category of the Missouri Department of Conservations' Endangered Species Postcard Contest. The Postcard Contest challenges Missouri’s kindergarten through 12th-grade students to illustrate a postcard with pictures of endangered species or species of conservation concern that depend on Missouri’s midsized rivers, such as the Platte, the Salt and the Osage rivers.

Australian Exchange Students Arrive

The faculty, staff and students at the high school welcomed four exchange students from Our Lady of Sion in Australia when classes resumed after Christmas break. Mollie McNamara, Georgia Thomas, Caroline Bermingham and Claire Anderson will be attending classes until January 20th. This summer their hosts Marina Dennis, Ali Lampo, Hannah Malvey and Lauren Ruiz will travel to Australia.

2 Seniors Announced Finalists by Arts Council

The Arts Council of Johnson County has announced that seniors Kaitlin Heaphy and Claire Martin have been chosen as Finalists in the Shooting Stars Recognition, Scholarship and Awards Program. Presented by the Arts Council of Johnson County, the Shooting Stars Program honors high school seniors and their arts educators for artistic excellence. All participating teachers and students are honored and scholarship recipients will be announced at the 2012 Shooting Stars Gala on April 1st at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and Yardley Hall, Johnson County Community College.

Dance Team Takes 1st Place

Congratulations to the Sion Dance Team on their impressive showing at the KC Classic Dance Competition at Liberty High School on Saturday, December 3. They received 1st place in Kick and 1st place in Pom.

Teacher Named Diamond Coach

Congratulations to Kristie Pennock, speech and debate coach at the high school, who has earned the distinction of first diamond coach in the National Forensic League. Under her instruction, students have earned more than 15,000 credit points through speech and debate presentations, competition, and service.

Le Flambeau Awarded First Honors

Congratulations to the staff of Sion's 2011 yearbook, Le Flambeau. They have just been awarded First Honors from the National Scholastic Press Association for the 20ll yearbook, with three marks of distinction. The 2011 Le Flambeau was also rated All-Missouri, the highest state rating.

Scholar Bowl Team Places 4th

Congratulations to the Scholar Bowl team who, this past weekend, finished 4th place in the North Kansas City High School Novice Tournament for Freshmen and Sophomores. 18 schools from both Missouri and Kansas competed in this first tournament of the year. Participating team members included Afton Apodaca, Cory Cole, Alexandra Dykeman, Kelly Lowndes and Nicole McMindes. A special congratulations to Cory Cole who received a second place medal for individual scoring.

Yearbook Students Win Awards

Four Sion high school girls attended the Summer Media workshop at MU and all four students won major awards for yearbook. Maddie Roederer took 1st place in Yearbook Layout Design, Maggie Gorman took 3rd place in Yearbook Layout Design, Brittany Koppers won the "From Flat to Phat Award" for best overall yearbook design and Meghan Gordon took 1st place for Best Use of Typography.

National Merit Commended Students Named

Congratulations to seniors Mary Crowe and Rachel Fenimore for being named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the PSAT Qualifying Test last October.

Sion Violists Perform At Kauffman Center

Two of Sion’s own musicians took the stage at the phenomenal Kauffman Center for The Performing Arts Open House. Cigi Danda and Claire Martin (Sion Symphonie violists) were not only among those touring this new grand facility, but they had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be perform for the 1,600 attendees that eagerly squeezed into Helzberg Hall to hear Kansas City's Youth Symphony. An estimated 55,000 people stood in line, in the rain, some for hours to view Kansas City’s new, state of the art performing arts center. Later in the year, Cigi and Claire and the Youth Symphony will play again at Kauffman Center, this time side-by-side with the Kansas City Symphony.

Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to senior Laura Camarata for being named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Laura is one of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists chosen from the 1.5 million juniors who entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. This is the 43rd year Sion has had a student recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Chapel of Our Lady of Sion Dedicated

Nearly 100 guests attended the Dedication Mass of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sion on Wednesday, August 24, 2011. Sion welcomed five Sisters of Sion to Kansas City for this special event. They joined Board of Trustee members, alumnae, alum parents, current parents, students, faculty and staff and friends of Sion at this special event officially opening the Chapel. The Bishop of Kansas City - St. Joseph Diocese, His Excellency Bishop Robert Finn, D.D., presided at the Mass and Blessing. Sion Outscores State and Nation on AP Test Scores

Sion high school has received news from the College Board, sponsors of the Advanced Placement Test Program, that based on the Spring, 2011 scores, 95% of Sion students taking AP tests had passing scores of 3 or higher as compared to 64% of the students in Missouri and 60% of the students nationally. Sion offers sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to take Advanced Placement college level classes. In the 2010/11 school year 129 Sion students took AP classes.

Sion Seniors Study in Australia

Six Sion seniors spent the past month of July in Melbourne, Australia studying at Our Lady of Sion College. These Kansas City girls had been hosts to their Australian Sion "sisters" in January of 2011. This is an annual exchange opportunity for Sion juniors and their families.
