For several years, the Sion High School community has been discussing the need to repair and improve the Sion Softball and Field Hockey/Soccer fields. A Board of Trustees appointed committee, which includes the athletic directors, administrators, board members and parent representatives, worked together for over a year to plan these improvements. The parents collaborated with the school to raise the funds for this project.
The improvements included a reorientation of the soccer/field hockey field from north/south to east/west so that field hockey and softball can play at the same time. This also allows field hockey and softball fields to be separately maintained to the specifications of each sport. It was leveled and new sod was laid. The drainage issues around the softball field have also been addressed. We are installing a watering system to maintain the fields and, ultimately, all the grounds of the high school.
These improvements will extend the life of the current field while we continue to raise funds to complete construction on the building, including a new chapel, classroom renovation, and a fine and performing arts center. The outdoor Athletic Complex, which will include a track, soccer, field hockey and softball fields, is still part of the Capital Campaign. This has been a great collaborative effort and we are hopeful it will serve as a model for future projects. We appreciate the work of the many parents, staff, administration and Board members who worked together to make this project a success.
