Grade School Athletics

Notre Dame de Sion believes that a robust program of extracurricular activities, including athletics, is a critical component of the educational experience.  Sion students have many opportunities to participate in sports beginning in the third grade. Through sports, Sion reinforces the educational mission of the school and fosters characteristics such as sportsmanship, perseverance and integrity.

Sion believes that participation in athletics is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the team, the school and the community at large.  The Athletic Department takes great pride in creating a successful sports program, as well as exemplary student-athletes. The goals of the athletics program are to:

  • Foster a positive self-image of student-athletes;
  • Strive for excellence and personal growth; and
  • Cultivate a sense of teamwork and community.

Sports

Student-Athletes represent the school in the Parochial League of Kansas City.  Sports available for play through the Parochial League include:

*Students interested in playing Football at Sion are able to participate with other member schools of the Parochial League if team size is insufficient.

Registration

Before a student can participate in any sport, the student must be registered through the Parochial League website at plkc.org. There is a registration fee for each student. Notification regarding timelines to register for the upcoming sports season will be sent to parents via email in the Wednesday Weekly.

Students must have a new physical on file each year in order to practice with a team.

Coaches

The Notre Dame de Sion community is served by multiple parent volunteers that act as coaches. Coaches set the example and foster sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork. Parents interested in serving as coaches must complete all requirements for coaching as set forth by the school and the Parochial League of Kansas City. Contact John Carter, Athletic Director, with any questions.

Bernie Myers Athletic Award

The Bernie Myers Athletic Award was established at Notre Dame de Sion Grade School in 1987 in honor of the female Physical Education teacher who initiated the sports programs at Sion. The purpose of the award is to recognize the overall spirit and dedication to Sion Athletics by demonstrating good sportsmanship, showing and earning the respect of coaches, teammates and opponents and possessing a positive competitive attitude.

To be considered for the Award, students must have participated in Sion sports for at least three years. Nominations of 8th graders are requested of all coaching staff of the eligible students and finalized by the Athletic Director.

The Award is presented during the eight grade graduation ceremony. A commemorative plaque listing all of the Award winners is located near the gymnasium of the school.
